In oriental medicine, Cervi Cornu has an effect of reinforcing Liver and Kidney, encouraging muscle and bone. And, in order to study effect on osteoporosis, I have done an experiment for ovariectomized rats which have administered with Cervi Cornu group.
The results were obstained as follows:
1. Body weight in Cervi Cornu group was increased in comparison with Control group, but this result showed no efficacy.
2. The level of serum ALP, phosphorus, S-GOT, S-GPT in Cervi Cornu group showed increase in comparison with Control group. The level of serum calcium in Cervi Cornu group showed decrease in comparison with Control group. But these results showed no efficacy. The level of serum osteocalcine in Cervi Cornu group showed a significant increase in comparison with Control group.
3. The urinary volume in Cervi Cornu group showed a significant increase in comparison with Control group. The level of urine creatinine in Cervi Cornu group showed a significant decrease in comparison with Control group. The level of urine calcium to creatinine ratio in Cervi Cornu group showed a significant increase in comparison with Control group.
4. The weight of uterus in Cervi Cornu group showed decrease in comparison with Control group.
5. The weight of tibia ash in Cervi Cornu group showed a significant increase in comparison with Control group. The bone density in Cervi Cornu group showed increase in comparison with Control group, but this result showed no efficacy.
According to above these results, Cervi Cornu has shown to be capable of preventing and curing osteoporosis caused by old-aged and postmenopause.
